Indigenous people who have lived on this land long before European colonization knew of and respected the precious gemstones such as gold, silver and turquoise found throughout what later became the state of Arizona. Today, over 60 mines are active across the state. The vast majority involve the industrial mining of sandstone, pumice and other minerals, but ore mining (gold, copper) is still quite common. This data originally comes from the U.S. Geological Survey and covers mining operations across the entirety of the United States. However, this map depicts active mines solely in the state of Arizona. This visualization was submitted by Ethan Stoneburner to the University of Arizona Libraries 2023 Data Visualization Challenge. --------------------------------------------- ## Materials and Methods Data was visualized using ArcGIS Pro and the poster was designed in Adobe InDesign
