## Summary

Provided abstract:

We discuss two well-known disjoint reference effects involving the implicit
external argument of passives. We show that, contrary to the common
assumption, these effects cannot be derived from Principle B/C. This
invalidates a strong argument for the claim that the external argument of
passives is represented in syntax. We further show, based on experimental
evidence, that the two disjoint reference effects can be overcome in
particular contexts and we provide a pragmatic explanation.
