Provided abstract: Sprouting is shown to be subject to an under-explored restriction against sprouting from VP-Ellipsis. I argue that this reflects a conflict between a requirement to recover an antecedent for VP-Ellipsis from the syntax and a requirement for recovering an antecedent for sprouted ellipses from a question meaning in the discourse. The remainder of the presentation presents Modal Complement Ellipsis as a case study in the utility of sprouting as a diagnostic for the size of an elided constituent. --------------------------------------------- ## Additional Notes Links: - https://sites.google.com/view/wccfl2021/ This presentation is part of the 2021 West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics collection, which is available here: https://doi.org/10.25422/azu.data.c.5325401
