Provided abstract: We investigate the interpretation of Romanian pronouns 'el/ea (him/her)' and test several assumptions regarding Condition B effects. We find: (i) no clear pressure for locally disjoint reference (contra Levinson, 1987), (ii) no clear pressure for bound variable readings (contra Reinhart, 1983; Reuland, 2011), (iii) evidence of competition between forms: complex reflexives compete with simplex pronouns, and (iv) this competition affects the bound variable interpretation of simplex pronouns. --------------------------------------------- ## Additional Notes Links: - https://sites.google.com/view/wccfl2021/ This presentation is part of the 2021 West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics collection, which is available here: https://doi.org/10.25422/azu.data.c.5325401
