Tiger Terrains and Timelines: Visualizing India's Tiger Territories
The latest report from India's National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) shows a significant increase in the tiger population across the country's five major tiger landscapes: 1) Shivalik Hills and Gangetic Plains, 2) Central Indian and Eastern Ghats, 3) Western Ghats, 4) Northeast Hills and Brahmaputra Flood Plains, and 5) Sundarbans.
This work aims to visually represent these five landscapes as an interactive 3D model using spatial data, and display the tiger population trend over time using a line graph.
For the 3D visualization, publicly available terrain data for India was first used to create a 2D map. The latitude and longitude coordinates of the tiger landscapes from the NTCA report were then overlaid. This 2D map was converted to a 3D interactive model with customized aesthetics.
The tiger population estimates from the report were extracted and plotted on a line graph. The graph shows an increasing trend in tiger numbers since 2006.
The visualizations demonstrate that conservation efforts are making positive impacts. Continued dedication to preserving these iconic animals and their habitats will hopefully lead to even better outcomes.
