Ellipsis of the complement of negation in Hungarian is blocked when a portmanteau negative copula spans across the ellipsis boundary. The portmanteau is shown to be formed post-syntactically, meaning that the contents of ellipsis sites must be post-syntactically accessible, contra recent proposals that ellipsis is purely a syntactic or transfer operation.
