Oral Presentation for "Having space to sprout: Failed sprouting in sub-clausal ellipses"

Sprouting is shown to be subject to an under-explored restriction against sprouting from VP-Ellipsis. I argue that this reflects a conflict between a requirement to recover an antecedent for VP-Ellipsis from the syntax and a requirement for recovering an antecedent for sprouted ellipses from a question meaning in the discourse. The remainder of the presentation presents Modal Complement Ellipsis as a case study in the utility of sprouting as a diagnostic for the size of an elided constituent.
