We present honorific mismatches between 2P pronouns and allocutivity in Japanese to argue against a consolidated account of honorificity à la Portner et al. (2019). The allocutive marker in Japanese consists of a [politeness] feature, valued by agreement with a c-like head. However, honorificity on Japanese pronouns is not monolithic and encodes a range of affective meanings, not all of which can be encoded via formal features. This shows that a c-based account is insufficient for pronouns.
