This poster investigates why aspectually zero-marked sentences in Mandarin are degraded on episodic readings only in certain contexts. I argue for the novel generalization that the degradedness correlates with whether the event instantiation is at-issue. I propose that those sentences are imperfectives, which do not entail but only conversationally implicate the episodic inferences. When the event instantiation is at-issue, this implicature is blocked by a contradictory scalar implicature.
